Can a locksmith make a key from the VIN?

Partly. The VIN can lead to a key code for the blade, but the chip still has to be programmed at the car.

Short answer
  • Key codes by VIN are released only to vetted locksmiths and dealers through security programs.
  • A key code cuts the metal blade; it doesn't program the chip.
  • The chip is programmed at the car, so the car has to be there.
  • Without a code, we decode the lock directly.

Blade vs chip

The blade opens the door and turns the ignition. The chip tells the immobilizer the key is allowed. A VIN can help with the first, never the second.

Fastest path

Text the year, make, model and location. Whether we use a code or decode the lock, the key is finished at the car.
