What proof of ownership do you need?

A responsible locksmith checks that the car is yours before making a key from scratch. Here's what works.

Short answer
  • Registration or title in your name, plus photo ID.
  • Bill of sale or auction paperwork for a just-bought car.
  • If papers are locked inside, we open the car first and check them there.
  • Company or fleet vehicles: a letter or authorization from the company.

Why we ask

A key from scratch is a working key to a car. Checking ownership protects you, your neighbors and us.

If your name isn't on it

A spouse's or parent's car: the owner's authorization, or the owner present. Leased cars: the lease paperwork works.
